Birmingham Airport has achieved a significant milestone by obtaining the ISO 45001 certification, affirming its dedication to enhancing occupational health and safety standards within its operations.

The ISO 45001:2018 certification serves as an international benchmark for Occupational Health and Safety (OH&S) Management Systems. Crafted to prioritise health and safety across corporate landscapes, this framework aims to bolster employee well-being, minimise workplace hazards, and address health and safety challenges effectively.

The airport’s certification scope encompasses terminal operations, including critical facets such as security, cleaning, and facilities management. This achievement underscores the airport's unwavering commitment to fostering a secure work environment, ensuring safety for all individuals using the facility.

Simon Toseland, Head of Health, Safety, and Fire at Birmingham Airport, expressed immense pride in attaining the ISO 45001 certification. He emphasised its alignment with the airport’s overarching vision of 'Safety Culture Excellence,' emphasising the paramount importance of ensuring safety for employees, passengers, and all visitors.

Selecting a certification body aligned with the airport's goals was crucial. Toseland highlighted the importance of choosing a partner well-versed in the aviation industry, poised to challenge and propel the airport's OH&S Management System towards continual improvement.

Pam Phillips, Senior Auditor at Lloyd's Register, lauded Birmingham Airport's commitment and engagement throughout the certification process. The airport's enthusiastic and knowledgeable team demonstrated a profound understanding of their roles and responsibilities, further solidifying their achievement.

Birmingham Airport, serving as the UK’s third-largest airport outside London, supports a workforce of 7000 on-site employees. Before the COVID-19 pandemic, the airport facilitated travel for around 13 million passengers annually. As the aviation industry gears up for a resurgence post-pandemic, Birmingham Airport underscores its unwavering focus on health and safety, placing it at the forefront of their revitalisation plans.
